(Approximately 11.5 kilos) Central brass 4 lever lock (no key) and 2 iron lockable bands shows that, for the size, this held something very valuable or very dear to the officer or regiment. Possibly maps/documents or an officer's personal valuables Has a brass engraved nameplate, possibly initials of officer or division/regiment Has a beautiful condition inner velvet and upper lining, though old could well have been added decades later. Obvious marks and patina commensurate with age. Couple of screws missing from one band on base. Easily replaced but should be done by someone familiar with woodworking etc.
