The trompe l'oeil box has been painted to look like a small lockable strong-box. It bears the name of the owner on the top. The name of the artist and date are on the underside, though this name is difficult to decipher. The doll may depict a ballet dancer as the style and costumes are similar to a known printed set depicting the ballerina Marie Taglioni, who performed between 1832 and 1847. The doll has no head though this could be replaced.
The costumes are in good bright condition with some small insect holes and a little rubbing. The box is worn and has very old, inactive insect holes.
This has been in my collection for several years and I can guarantee that there has been no further deterioration. Please take care to look at all 12 photos, which can be enlarged. The figure would measure about 6.25 inches 16 cm.
The costumes measure about 4.25 to 5.5 inches 11 to 14 cm. I guarantee that this is a genuine antique hand-painted paper doll with costumes, from the 1830s.
