Georgian Regency Rare Penwork Mask Head Lacquer Box Inscribed Name & Location

A rare Georgian Regency period penwork lacquer box. It is of rectangular form with curved shoulders and shaped base profile. It is has fine decoration of a flower basket to the lid and mask heads and classical patterns to the body. The work on the faces is particularly fine as can be seen.

The escutcheon looks to be silver (unmarked) and the lock does work although is somewhat temperamental. Interior is now vacant, it was probably originally set out as a jewellery or small writing box. Most interesting is that it is named with - Mary Ann Wild - Meertown School - this being done at time of production rather than a later inscribing, so this item was commissioned for the owner.

Meertown (now known as Meretown) is a hamlet on the Staffordshire / Shropshire border, and the school was associated with Aqualate Manor although I can find little other information. The Manor is named after the mere (shallow lake) which is close to Meertown. Should I manage to find further information, this will be added.

A wonderful item and having the history of the name and location making it even more exciting. A great example to research as well as display.

There are obvious scratches to the top, wear to the sides and losses of the lacquer, and I have shown the worst in the images. Fortunately the surface of the lacquer where not worn is in good order with a high gloss allowing all the detail to be appreciated. The interior is now vacant and papered and painted yellow, originally there would have been wooden dividers.

To the underside the feet are missing, it would likely have had brass paw feet - the holes where these would have been set are apparent. Lock functional but temperamental, hinges are ok.
