A RARE AND IMPORTANT BISCUIT BOX BY EMANUEL JOSEF MARGOLD FOR H. Measurements approx 175 mm wide by 82 mm deep and 40 mm high. Base metal the underside impressed with Bahlsen trade mark and exhibition / prize details. The Bahlsen biscuit factory won numerous awards for this box design by Margold, including the Royal Prussian state medal during the world exhibition 1904, the Baltic exhibition in 1910 and the Royal medal in Malmo in 1914. Margold was a member of the Darmstadt artists' colony - a leading German centre for arts and crafts - and later a designer for the Wiener Werkstatte, working for a time as assistant to Josef Hoffmann.

Aside from his celebrated corporate design for Bahlsen, of which this box is a famous example, he worked in ceramics, interior design and jewellery among other media. Condition: Excellent; this is an uncommonly good survivor. Externally, the pattern is very bright and clear and there are only minor surface signs of age and use. There are no significant damages such as splits, dents or gouges to the metal or signs of restoration. The inscription on the underside reads.

Bahlsens Keks-Fabrik Hannover Weltaustellungen St Louis 1904 Brussels 1910 Turin 1911 Gent 1913 Grosser Preis Konigl. There is an example of this biscuit box held in the British Museum's permanent collection museum number. Bonhams London, June 16 2010. Pioneering 20th Century Design: The Torsten Brohan Collection.

There are many more items in my shop that don't appear in regular item searches. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. It's hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is!

Thank you for your understanding. Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs.
