Rare Large Civil Defense Placards in Original Box 1950s Cold War Posters
Rare and large-scale vintage 1950s or early 1960s Civil Defense placards unused and new in original box. Each four feet tall, the educational Cold War images are painted on large panels of masonite (about 1/3 inch thick) depicting an ideal home fallout shelter, illustrating the recommended supplies with which you should stock your basement for nuclear apocalypse. Showing a family huddled against a subterranean cinder block wall and posing the question Is Your Home Ready for an Emergency? The Office of Civil Defense designed the powerful images to bring the fear of nuclear war with the Soviets into the home and encourage Americans to ready for a very real and radioactive threat despite the sense of dread and futility involved in these grim preparations. The set of placards were apparently distributed to local fire departments for display in municipal buildings or local fairs.

This set remained untouched and boxed up for more than fifty years. With their bold colors and compelling compositions, the museum-worthy stencil-painted panels are iconic examples of midcentury graphic design, and together would make a dramatic and colorful large-scale wall display.

Three vertical panels: 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Grandma's Pantry: 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. For more pleasing and peculiar objects, follow "oldasadam" on Instagram and Facebook.
