Rare German 3 Bird 8 Day Black Forest August Schatz In Original Box Cuckoo Clock

We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally impressive collection of music boxes and other very nice antique and vintage collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an outstanding find of a beautiful, fully intact, lightly used, mechanical 8 day cuckoo clock with a rare 3 bird case that was created about 70 years ago in the Black Forest of St Georgen "Germany" by "August Schatz, " one of the best clock makers in this region of the world! The clock is hand carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest.

It was created to look like an intricately carved grape vine complete with five, large, deeply hand carved grape leaves on the front along with a carved wooden bird perched to the lower left of the dial and another, equally impressive carved wooden bird perched to the right. And there is a beautifully hand carved, larger, ornate wooden bird perched on the very top looking as though he's ready to fly. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time.

The name and phrase, "Schatz 8 Day" are found just above the dial in their familiar calligraphy logo signature in metallic script. The back is wood too and secured with two metal latches.

It removes to allow access to the all metal, weight driven mechanical movement inside the case produced by Schatz and bearing his name. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activity.

The wooden bellow or whistle tubes look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird opens the small door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime inside the case and then retreats back inside and closes the door.

The bird reappears at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours and then goes back inside the case and closes the door behind him; fascinating! The clock has another great feature...

There is a braided cord protruding underneath the case and it has a brass ring on the end. When pulled each time, the clock will advance the cuckoo activity by one half hour which is a great time saver if the clock ever needs to be recalibrated. The clock works just fine here, cuckoos well, and keeps good time too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we don't know the service history so some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The movement does show signs of regular maintenance but nonetheless, we always advise our clock customers to service their vintage or antique clocks at least once every three years.

Doing so will preserve a classic clock like this one and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a hand carved wooden grape leaf pendulum, the original clock factory box and "Schatz" COA emblem, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. Ive looked the clock over fairly well and cant find any damage, missing pieces, or repairs. The clock shows some minor signs of use and has a gorgeous extra dark mahogany finish! The clock is an impressive size too measuring about 12 1/2" or so (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6" or so at its deepest point, and about 9 across the top.

This clock would be the focal point in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing it in your home, office or wherever it is that you care to showcase a magnificent, 8 day mechanical German timepiece with a solid history behind it.
